Why Scouting?

If you're not familiar with scouting you may be wondering if it is the right thing for you and your son. "What does it offer?" you may ask yourself. Or more precisely, "what it can offer that I couldn't do on my own?" These are important questions, so I thought I would offer my own observations, and describe how the program is structured.

Scouting as an Aid to Parents.
As parents, we would like our children to excel. We would like them to be self-reliant, dependable, and caring individuals. Well, scouting has the same goals! And they've been doing it for a long time. Scouting has been around since 1910. During this time they've developed a system of activities and programs designed to not only be fun, but also act as a positive influence on our children.
Cub Scouting emphasises that each boy should "Do their best." They shouldn't feel discouraged if they're not the fastest or the best, but be proud of doing a good job. Cub Scouts also teaches by example that people should be helpful to others.

The Cub Scout Program
Cub Scouts (including Tiger Cubs) is designed for boys in grades 1 through 5. The program is divided into ranks which consist of age-appropriate activities. Each boy belongs to a "Den", which is a small group of other boys his same age.

  • Tiger Cubs is a program for boys in first-grade. One parent, or other adult partner, is required to register with each Tiger Cub. This program is primarily meant to be fun, and a chance for boys to do new things with their family and Den. These activities are centered about three areas: Den, Family , and "Go See It".
  • Wolf Scouts are boys in 2nd grade. The boys work on completing 12 achievements involving simple physical and mental skills.
  • Bear Scouts are boys in 3rd grade. Their program involves choosing 12 out of 24 achievements involving, God, Country, Family, and Self.
  • Webelos is for boys in fourth and fifth grades. It is a challenging program which involves earning their Webelos badge, then earning activity pins in the following categories: Aquanaut, Artist, Athlete, Citizen, Communicator, Craftsman, Engineer, Family Member, Fitness, Forester, Geologist, Handyman, Naturalist, Outdoorsman, Readyman, Scholar, Scientist, Showman, Sportsman, and Traveler. At the end of the Webelos program, boys are ready to become Boy Scouts.

Advancement
Boys love praise, so an important part of Scouting is giving the boys recognition for their achievements. Throughout the year, all the Dens meet together as a Pack where we present the boys with the awards they've earned. And there are plenty of opportunities to earn awards. In addition to earning their rank badges (and progress towards ranks awards), the boys can also earn awards for doing elective tasks (arrow points), academics and sports (beltloops and pins), as well as receiving badges for taking part in pack activities (popcorn sales, food drive, cub winter day, etc).

Special Programs
Cub Scouts has several special events throughout the year that the boys look forward to. The Pinewood derby is a favorite, where the boys build and race their own creations. Family campouts bring the boys into the great outdoors and provide an opportunity for the families to get to know eachother. The Blue and Gold Banquet is an annual celebration of Cub Scouting. And finally Cub Winter Days are a great way to have good, muddy, fun!

Conclusion
Scouting is a great way for parents to get help raising our boys to be responsible and successful adults. It is exciting and fun for the boys (and also for parents). In short, it helps prepare boys for a successful life
